Positive Behaviour Support

Behaviour makes sense once you know what it is for

Behaviour that worries people is almost always communicating something: pain, fear, boredom, overload, or a need that has no other way out. Our job is to work out what, and then change the conditions rather than the person.

Fewer restrictions, better days

Positive behaviour support is evidence-based and it is not about compliance. The goal is a better quality of life. More choice, more things worth doing, better relationships, and less need for anyone to be restricted.

We start by getting to know the person properly and by asking what is happening around the behaviour: when, where, with whom, after what. That is the functional behaviour assessment. What comes out of it is a plan built around prevention, teaching and better responses, not consequences.

Where restrictive practices are already in place, we work to reduce and eliminate them. That is a legal obligation and it is also the point.

Plans that get used

A plan in a drawer changes nothing. Our practitioners train the people who are actually there: family, support workers and school staff. Then they come back to check how it is going in practice.

What we provide

  • Functional behaviour assessmentUnderstanding what the behaviour achieves, what triggers it, and what is keeping it going.
  • Interim behaviour support plansWhere there is immediate risk, an interim plan is lodged within one month while the full assessment continues.
  • Comprehensive behaviour support plansThe full plan, developed with everyone involved and lodged with the NDIS Commission.
  • Restrictive practice reductionWorking systematically towards fewer restrictions, with the authorisations and reporting handled properly.
  • Training and implementationTeaching families, support workers and other providers how to use the plan, and checking that it is working.
  • Review and adjustmentPlans are living documents. We review against real data and change what is not working.

Delivered under NDIS registration group 0110 Behaviour Support. Our plans are written by practitioners holding a current NDIS Commission suitability determination, working within their assessed capability level and under supervision where required.

About restrictive practices in Victoria

A restrictive practice is anything that limits someone's rights or freedom of movement. If a plan involves a regulated restrictive practice, it must be authorised under Victorian law through the Office of the Senior Practitioner as well as lodged with the NDIS Commission, and its use must be reported monthly. We handle that process and explain each step to you. Any use of a restrictive practice that is not authorised is a reportable incident.

Questions

Behaviour support, answered

Where a restrictive practice is in place, an interim plan must be lodged within one month and a comprehensive plan within six months. In practice, a thorough functional behaviour assessment usually takes several sessions across a few weeks, because we need to see what happens in different settings and talk to the people who know the person best.

Usually Capacity Building, under Improved Relationships. If there is nothing in your plan for it and you think you need it, an assessment or report can support a request at your next plan reassessment. We can talk you through what evidence tends to help.

Absolutely, and we prefer to. A plan only works if the people delivering support every day understand it and believe in it. We will train whichever team is around the person, whether they work for us or for another provider.

No. It is about understanding what the behaviour is doing for the person and making sure that need gets met another way, one that works better for them and for everyone around them. Behaviour that decreases because someone has a better life is a very different thing from behaviour suppressed by restriction.
